Just one block from the inn, you can still visit over sixty specialty shops, fine restaurants and galleries in those historic buildings.

Stone Mountain Village was established as New Gibraltar in 1845 on the Georgia Rail Road line and has a rich and interesting history. The mountain was a popular tourist spot (as it still is) and also was used to quarry granite. Many people began to vist and then to move to the area. Stone Mountain Depot was a strategic point for Sherman's troops in diabling Atlanta during the Civil War. The Union Army destroyed some five miles of rail line and much of the small village. Buildings used as hospitals were spared - so survived the building that now houses The Village Inn Bed & Breakfast. As Southerners rebuilt, quarrying became a profitable enterprise for Stone Mountain. A new depot replaced the damaged one and merchants set up shop across the street.
